Gå in utan förväntningar.The solitary, steep hill called Corona Heights was black as pitch and very silent, like the heart of the unknown. Den hade gärna fått gå in mer på De Castries och hans idéer men då hade risken istället varit att den varit för lång. Det var aldrig svårläst eller så att det tog emot. Mer spökhistoria än något annat men en bra sådan. Westerns mardröm om hans fru och bokens klimax är riktigt kusliga och Leiber lyckas bra med att med hjälp av små, fjäderlätta grepp byga en bra stämning. Språket flyter bra och glimmar ibland till riktigt vackert, karaktärerna så definerade som de behöver vara och den har vissa riktigt snygga delar.
Är den bra? Ja, på det stora hela så är den det. Det är nog precis därför jag inte gillar den så mycket som jag hoppats, då King bara nämner den i förbifarten men på ett sådant vis att jag tyvärr byggt upp förväntningar. Just Lieber själv var jag vagt bekant med innan men just "Our Lady of Darkness" hörde jag talas om via Stephen King och hans "Dance Macabre". Denna korta roman skrevs i slutet av sjuttio-talet och gavs först ut under titeln "The Pale Brown Thing" i tidningen The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Han var en av förgrundsfigurerna inom Sword & Sorcery, för det första. Leiber's late short fiction, and the fine horror novel Our Lady of Darkness, combine autobiographical issues like his struggle with depression and alcoholism with meditations on the emotional content of the fantastic genres. Leiber's science fiction includes the planet-smashing The Wanderer in which a large cast mostly survive flood, fire, and the sexual attentions of feline aliens, and the satirical A Spectre is Haunting Texas in which a gangling, exo-skeleton-clad actor from the Moon leads a revolution and finds his true love. He found his mature voice early in the first of the sword-and-sorcery adventures featuring the large sensitive barbarian Fafhrd and the small street-smart-ish Gray Mouser he returned to this series at various points in his career, using it sometimes for farce and sometimes for gloomy mood pieces-The Swords of Lankhmar is perhaps the best single volume of their adventures. was one of the more interesting of the young writers who came into HP Lovecraft's orbit, and some of his best early short fiction is horror rather than sf or fantasy.
